Performs intermediate semiskilled work in the transportation of pupils to and from school and special events; does related work as required. Work is performed under regular supervision.
This is light work requiring the exertion of up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects; work requires climbing, stooping, crouching, reaching, pushing, pulling, grasping, and repetitive motions; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word, and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly, or quickly; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, operation of motor vehicles or equipment, and observing general surroundings and activities; the worker is subject to outside environmental conditions, noise, vibration, and atmospheric conditions.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/TYPICAL TASKS:
Driving a school bus; picking up and delivering students to/from school.
Conducts pre-trip and post-trip inspections;
Maintains safety equipment; reports unsafe bus conditions;
Adheres to preventive maintenance schedule;
Completes required forms and reports in an accurate and timely manner;
Adheres and complies with safety rules, motoring regulations and laws;
Attends all scheduled meetings;
Loads bus according to established procedures;
Assigns seats to all students; follows designated route schedule;
Stops at authorized route schedule; stops at authorized stops only;
Notifies proper authorities in case of bus breakdown or deviations in schedule;
Ensures that all pupils are accounted for and all runs are covered;
Ensures that all pupils are off the bus immediately following each run;
Performs pre‑trip and post-trip inspections of school bus; reports operating and equipment deficiencies;
Washes bus; cleans bus inside and out; fuels bus as required;
Obeys all traffic laws and observes mandatory safety regulations for school bus operations;
Transports only authorized students;
Reports all accidents and completes required reports;
Conducts periodic emergency bus evacuation drills;
Transports students to special events and field trips;
Ensures passenger safety; maintains discipline on bus;
Makes bus available for periodic maintenance;
Performs related tasks as required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
General knowledge of the problems involved in operating a school bus; general knowledge of the geography of the city and the location of streets; skill in the safe operation of a school bus; ability to detect malfunctioning equipment; ability to assist children using patience and understanding; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with school officials, parents, associates and students.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Possession of an appropriate driver’s license valid in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
Possession of or ability to acquire appropriate license(s), certificate(s), and/or endorsement(s) for position as required by the Commonwealth of Virginia and School Board.
