Purpose: This position is the Mobile Lab Driver for a 38 ft RV. The mobile lab travels to select specimen collection sites/locations throughout the state. Driver will have overnight stays while mobile lab is used for sample collections at these sites (typically, the mobile lab is stationed at a specific site 3-5 days a week at a time, including some weekends).
Driving to and from sites is anticipated to take about 15% of your time. The remaining 85% will be comprised of supporting sample collection efforts onsite as well as performing administrative duties while not travelling. When the mobile lab is stationed at a specimen collection site, the mobile lab driver will support operations under the direction of the mobile lab operations coordinator(s). In this support role, the operator will work closely with the public and project participants and should be able to represent MDHHS well. When the mobile lab is not in operation around the state, this position will provide administrative support to project teams.
The mobile lab will be used to initially support surveillance programs within the Field Epidemiology Section in the Division of Environmental Health at the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, but it is expected that the mobile lab will be available across other projects.
Duties and Responsibilities as the primary mobile lab operator:
Responsible for driving the vehicle and working with Field Staff in setting up the mobile lab in the field. Drives mobile lab to sample collections sites throughout Michigan. Travel throughout Michigan.
Responsible for sample storage conditions and upkeep of the mobile lab in the field, as well as tracking and scheduling maintenance of the mobile lab.
Schedules and works with MDHHS Motor Pool on routine maintenance of the mobile lab and records metrics such as mileage, gas and oil usage.
When not driving (approximately 85% of the time), this position supports the mobile lab operations which could include screening participants, stocking and maintaining supplies and equipment, loading/unloading goods from the mobile lab, cleaning between participants, and other duties as assigned.
When not in the field, this position assists with administrative support at the main office (Lansing).
Travel requirements
Regular travel within the state, including evenings, weekends, and overnights
Schedule will likely be compressed, 4 – 10 hr. workdays. Rest days are incorporated into the schedule.
Travel requirements will be regularly evaluated to ensure program needs are being met. Mobile lab driver should be flexible.
Qualifications/Requirements:
Education: A high school diploma or equivalency is required.
Experience: One – three years of related and progressively more expansive work experience driving commercial vehicles with Commercial Driver’s license.
Important Skills and Characteristics:
Knowledge of the proper, safe, and most efficient methods for operating a vehicles especially RV-type vehicles; knowledge of loading and unloading motor vehicle equipment.
Ability to operate mechanized lift for wheelchair access.
Ability to communicate with the public in a professional and courteous manner.

Ability to read and interpret road maps in order to plan trips and determine traffic routes.
Ability to routinely lift and/or move heavy objects.
Ability to maintain favorable public relations.
Work Environment and Physical Requirements: The employee loads supplies to the mobile lab. Items and supplies can be bulky and weigh up to 40lbs. As mobile lab driver there is frequent travel within the State, including evenings, overnights and/or weekends. May occasionally be exposed to cold or wet weather conditions.
RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE WORK OF OTHERS: No assigned responsibility.
IMPACT ON PROJECTS, SERVICES AND OPERATIONS: This position serves to support the work within the Division of Environmental Health. The mobile lab driver will work in cooperation with the Biomonitoring Logistics Unit staff and project teams to ensure projects goals are achieved, by assisting with mobile lab operations and other duties as assigned.
